About Certification

The American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine offers certification in the specialty of venous and lymphatic medicine, sometimes referred to as phlebology. Certification demonstrates that physicians have met rigorous standards of education, experience, and evaluation. In order to become certified, a phlebologist must:

  • Complete the requisite training or experience qualifications.
  • Meet the continuing medical education requirements.
  • Pass the certification examination.

Benefits of Certification

Medical specialty certification in the United States is a voluntary process. While medical licensure sets the minimum competency requirements to diagnose and treat patients, it is not specialty specific. Certification demonstrates a physician's commitment and expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.

With so many practitioners with varying degrees of experience in the field, it is vital for those physicians with a superior knowledge and experience base to be certified in order to demonstrate their expertise.

Upon successfully passing the exam, you will become a diplomate of the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine, receive a certification certificate, and have the option of being listed in the ABVLM "Find a Certified Physician" database.

Length of Certification

After passing the written examination, a physician will be awarded a certificate acknowledging that he or she has met specific standards and qualifications and has passed the examination conducted by the Board. Like many other medical boards, the certificate issued by ABVLM is a "continuous certificate" and subject to the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program requirements. All new diplomates are placed on an ongoing Continuous Certification program of 2-year cycles.
